Is It Republic of the Philippines (RP) or Philippine Islands(PI)?

Today, July 4 marks a very significant change in Philippine History. Hmmm but wait, seems like i am drifting away from the main topic? What is the relevance of July 4 with the question whether the country is supposedly called Republic of the Philippines or Philippine Islands? Well, this day is indeed very relevant to the topic. Let's activate our time machine and go back to Philippine history.

"The official name of the Philippines has changed several times in the course of the country's history. During the Philippine Revolution, the Malolos Congress proclaimed the establishment of the República Filipina or the Philippine Republic. From the period of the Spanish–American War (1898) and the Philippine–American War (1899–1902) until the Commonwealth period (1935–1946), American colonial authorities referred to the country as the Philippine Islands. Since the signing of Treaty of General Relations in July 4, 1946 between U.S.A and the Philippines, the former relinguished its sovereignty over the Philippines and finally recognized Philippine independence. Since then, the official name of the country has been the Republic of the Philippines.”

So now we know the history, are we still going to call the country Philippine Islands?  With due respect to the country's independence, it is politically correct to say REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES or simply Philippines.
